Introduction to Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)

Even without your knowledge, the incredible things your body is capable of are truly remarkable. Every day, your skin cells are replacing themselves, nutrients are taken from food and delivered to EXACTLY where they need to go, and even your lungs are casually converting oxygen into carbon dioxide. Most people aren’t unaware that your body is also producing regenerative and reconstructive “liquid gold” in the form of platelet-rich plasma (PRP). When separated from your blood, PRP serum acts as a type of miracle elixir that can be used in numerous treatments and procedures to improve their respective outcomes.

At CA Aesthetics in Los Gatos, CA, Dr. Eric Li and his MedSpa team provide streamlined PRP treatments for our San Jose and Bay Area patients to help them heal quicker and see better aesthetic results faster.

What is PRP?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a compound naturally derived from your blood. It offers numerous innovative benefits when used medically and cosmetically, as it contains vital growth factors that help accelerate healing and support cellular regeneration.

Obtaining PRP involves drawing blood from your veins, processing it in a centrifuge (a device that spins extremely fast) that separates the blood into different components, and collecting the separated plasma from your blood. Once retrieved, the PRP can be used in numerous treatments we offer to expedite healing and produce the best possible and desired aesthetic results.

PRP Treatments

Hair Restoration

PRP Hair Restoration helps both men and women treat hair loss or thinning. Once the PRP has been obtained, it is injected into the scalp and interacts with the hair follicles. This process stimulates a specialized population of cells called dermal papilla cells, which play a critical role in hair growth.

For the best results, a series of PRP hair treatments consists of two to three sessions, with maintenance treatments available every four to six months.

Sometimes, this approach is combined with other hair loss procedures or medications for even better results. Dr. Li and his MedSpa team can help create a treatment that best suits your needs.

Microneedling

A process also known as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), microneedling gently penetrates the dermis, creating tiny controlled skin injuries stimulating your body’s natural healing response without visible scarring. Combining it with PRP encourages collagen production, enhances skin texture, and fosters a radiant, youthful complexion.  Microneedling combined with PRP is sometimes known as the “Vampire Facial.”

A microneedling session with PRP typically lasts about half an hour, but it will depend on the number and size of the areas treated.

Scar Treatment

Treating scars with PRP stimulates the body’s natural healing processes, promotes collagen production, and encourages the regeneration of skin cells. This can soften and flatten raised or hypertrophic scars. Using PRP for scar treatment can also reduce the redness and pigmentation often associated with scars, improving overall skin texture and tone.

The entire process takes about an hour, and you can return to your life immediately without stitches, laser burns, or wound care. On average, most patients require a minimum of three sessions spaced at least four weeks apart.

Unlike some other scar treatments, PRP Scar Treatment is minimally invasive and has a low risk of adverse reactions, making it a popular choice for those in San Jose and the Bay Area looking to improve the appearance of scarring with natural-looking results.

Skin Rejuvenation

When PRP is injected into your tissues, it can dramatically improve the appearance of your skin. Numerous benefits include natural volume augmentation and promotion of skin cell growth, reducing fine lines and wrinkles and improving skin texture and tone. This treatment has been particularly popular in lieu of synthetic fillers for sensitive areas like the tear troughs and eyelids.

Your treatment will last between one and two hours, including the time for the topical numbing cream to work, the PRP to be isolated from your blood, and the PRP to be injected into your skin. Most patients notice an improvement in their treated areas in the first month after treatment. For best results, it is recommended to have two to three treatments spaced at six—to eight-week intervals.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) First Step

What’s the first step?

The first step in getting PRP treatment in the San Jose and Los Gatos areas is to contact CA Aesthetics and schedule a consultation with either Dr. Eric Li or his aesthetic nurses. During your consultation, they will listen to your aesthetic goals and reasons for seeking PRP treatment, evaluate your hair, skin condition, and scars to determine where PRP treatments can best serve you, and create a customized treatment plan designed specifically for you.

During this consultation, Dr. Li or his aesthetic nurses will discuss your lifestyle and medical history, so it is important to be open and honest to create a proper treatment plan to ensure your safety and help prevent unnecessary risks.

Once you have determined the best course of treatment for you, our patient coordinator will help you schedule a procedure date.

What to Expect on the Day of a PRP Treatment

When you come into our CA Aesthetics practice for your PRP treatment, you will be seated comfortably in our treatment room. After prepping the area where your blood will be drawn, we will carefully withdraw a small amount of your blood, which is then processed using specialized equipment to separate your blood into PRP and other components. The following will then occur, based on your specific treatment:

  • Hair Restoration: PRP will be injected into various areas of your scalp to help stimulate hair follicle growth.
  • Microneedling: PRP is applied on your skin, after which the microneedling device makes very tiny microchannels in your skin, resulting in penetration of the PRP into your skin. After the microneedling procedure is complete, PRP is again applied to your skin, allowing further absorption into your skin.
  • Scar Treatment: PRP will be injected into the targeted areas of your scars.
  • Skin Rejuvenation: Your face will be cleaned thoroughly before the PRP facial treatment. PRP will then be carefully injected underneath your skin in the areas that concern you.

Most patients can return to normal activities immediately. You will be provided with a detailed list of specific instructions to follow to help ensure the treatment is successful.

PRP Recovery

While you can return home the same day after your PRP treatment, it is important to follow post-care instructions. Most of these treatments involve minimal to zero downtime, and while you are not as limited in your activities as with surgery, you should avoid any strenuous physical activity for the first few days. You can also expect minor swelling and/or bruising in the treatment areas, but this will subside with time – usually just a few days.

Here is what you can expect following your treatment:

  • Hair Restoration: Although there is no downtime, you will need to refrain from washing your hair for the first twenty-four hours after your treatment and avoid sun exposure. Your scalp will be tender for a few weeks, but any discomfort can be treated with over-the-counter pain medications.
  • Microneedling: Following the treatment, you may experience redness and mild swelling, similar to a sunburn, which typically subsides within a day or two. You should begin to see your skin undergoing a transformative process after this period, with continued enhancement over the following weeks as collagen production intensifies.
  • Scar Treatment: You can expect to see gradual improvements in the appearance of your scar as your skin regenerates and heals over the weeks and months following your scar treatment using PRP. It is recommended to undergo several treatment sessions to incrementally improve your scar’s appearance.
  • Skin Rejuvenation: After your PRP injections for skin rejuvenation, you can expect some swelling or redness, with some patients even experiencing mild skin sensitivity. These symptoms are temporary and should reduce or disappear several days after treatment. You will need to avoid using strong or exfoliating facial cleansers and irritating the skin following the treatment.
